Notes:   The Dean asked me to make it clear that this course is optional and that you will NOT earn credit for it! I will give you a grade after the ninth week, and turn those grades in to the Grad Dept at the end of the term, but it won’t affect your Grade Point Average. So, if you come, you are coming “for fun” and to improve your English, not for a grade.

I hope you will make every effort to attend for the first nine weeks (every absence after the first will affect your grade, no matter why you are gone). If you must be absent, try to tell a classmate so we know where you are. Otherwise, you don’t have to do anything (no notes, email, phone calls, etc are required). You are also responsible for finding out what we studied in class and what homework was assigned or collected (regarding homework when you are absent or ill, see the “welcome” sheet). After the exam, I will not take attendance, but please tell me if you don’t plan to keep coming (so I don’t waste money on copies). The second part of this course will be more informal, and I’ll ask for your input when deciding what to present (and we may also change the schedule for that portion).

If you cannot attend the midterm exam, and don’t make special arrangements to take the exam within two days of when I give it, then your name will be dropped from the class roster. Any cheating/plagiarism will be treated seriously (I may simply ask you to leave my class and never come back).

Partner report. Until April 20, you must spend at least 15 minutes per week, outside of class, talking to your partner. When you finish (each week), one of you will write one or two sentences telling me what you talked about (use complete sentences; let the other person check the grammar; alternate between partners). Give me this “report” after every two weeks (it must be typed, but “typing errors” will not hurt you); be sure your names are on top like this:  Joni (2009123), Zhen-ai (2009321), Wed 10, April 12[1]

Grading (the teacher reserves the right to adjust these percentages)

In light of your heavy load in medical classes this term, your grade will be based on the first nine weeks only.

         Class participation/"daily grade"/attendance/role plays                     20%

Homework, partner reports and quiz                                                20%

         Exam (written 45%; oral 15%)                                                        60%

[1] This is the date you gave me the report, and I will assume that it is for the preceding two weeks. Late penalty -25%
